Philanthropy

Our philanthropic activities take two paths.

First, are the programs and causes supported by the team members of each of The Shidler Group offices. The initiatives tend to reflect the interests of individual employees and partners and are typically focused on their respective communities.

Second, are the programs and causes supported by Jay Shidler and The Shidler Family Foundation. These tend to focus on the long-term financial support of long-life educational institutions such as colleges and universities. Some of this financial support comes in the form of cash flow generated by the real estate activities of The Shidler Group.

  • The Shidler Group - Most of the activities of Team Shidler combine both financial support and personal involvement. This spirit of volunteerism has a 50-year history in our organization.

We lead food and donation drives, with our building tenants across Oahu.
Our teams raise money with sponsors in the Hawaiʻi Bowl for Kids Sake events.
Our team prepares meals for families with children at Honolulu area hospitals.
We collect donations for at-risk youth in annual Sock, Slipper & Backpacks of Love drives.
Each year, we raise money by participating in the annual March for Babies event.
We raise money by rappelling from a 30-story building at the “Over the Edge” annual event.

  • Jay Shidler and The Shidler Family Foundation - Most of these activities involve the donation of specific interests in properties that The Shidler Group acquires, which are used to support public university-level education. Since universities are long-life organizations, Jay Shidler and The Shidler Group have endowed certain institutions with long-term income and reversionary interests in the Land underlying major multifamily communities and commercial complexes throughout the US.

These Leased Fee interests and their long-term Ground Leases are considered to be the safest of all real estate investments and are ideal for supporting long-life educational institutions. Beneficiaries of these Leased Fee interests have included the University of Washington School of Law, the University of Washington School of Medicine, the University of Hawaiʻi Foundation, and the Shidler College of Business at the University of Hawaiʻi.
